Choose the transport that fits your shipment

Importing goods to the Netherlands starts with the right transport plan. We compare the options based on your goods, collection point, budget and delivery deadline.

Sea freight: FCL and LCL

Need a full container or just part of one? With FCL, you book a container for your goods. With LCL, your cargo shares container space with other shipments. We arrange sea freight and the agreed collection and delivery.

What does importing to the Netherlands cost?

The total depends on the route, cargo volume, weight, timing and agreed services. Compare quotes for the same shipment and check what is included.

  • Collection and handling at origin.
  • International freight and applicable surcharges.
  • Arrival handling and final delivery.
  • Customs clearance for goods imported from outside the EU.
  • Applicable import duties, import VAT and other levies.
  • Optional cargo insurance, storage or inspection charges.

For non-EU imports, duties depend on factors such as the goods classification, origin and customs value. Check which transport and customs clearance services the quote covers. Ask whether duties, import VAT and other charges are included or payable separately.

Customs clearance and import documents

Bringing goods from outside the EU into free circulation in the Netherlands requires an import declaration. Your business needs an EORI number for the customs formalities. Nextport coordinates the clearance and tells you which information we need.

  • A commercial invoice with the goods description and value.
  • A packing list with quantities, dimensions and weights.
  • The collection and delivery addresses.
  • The agreed delivery terms and named place.
  • Any certificates, permits or product documents required for your goods.

Buying goods already in free circulation within the EU generally does not require an import declaration. Product requirements and VAT obligations still need attention.

For goods from outside the EU, establish who acts as importer and check the applicable product requirements, restrictions and permits before booking. Customs clearance does not replace these checks.

Questions about importing to the Netherlands

How do I arrange an import shipment to the Netherlands?

Start with the goods description, shipment size, collection point, delivery address and ready date. Agree the delivery terms with your supplier. Nextport uses those details to prepare a transport plan and quote, including customs clearance where required.

Do I need customs clearance for every shipment?

No. Goods imported from outside the EU into free circulation require an import declaration. Goods already in free circulation moving between EU countries generally do not. The origin, customs status and route determine which formalities apply.

Can I import a few pallets without booking a full container?

Yes. LCL sea freight lets your goods share container space with other shipments. Depending on the route and deadline, air freight or road groupage may also be suitable. We compare the options using your cargo volume, weight and delivery needs.

How long does importing to the Netherlands take?

That depends on the origin, route, service, cargo ready date and available capacity. Collection, handling, customs clearance where required and final delivery also take time. Ask us for a current estimate for the complete journey.

Can Nextport arrange collection and delivery?

Yes. We can coordinate collection from your supplier, international transport, customs clearance where required and delivery in the Netherlands. Your quote and agreed delivery terms define the scope.

Is cargo insurance included automatically?

Do not assume that it is. Check what has been agreed for your shipment and whether separate cargo insurance is needed. We can discuss the options before departure.

What information do you need for a quote?

Send the goods description, number of packages, dimensions, gross weight, collection and delivery addresses, cargo ready date and required delivery date. Include the agreed delivery terms. Tell us about access restrictions or unloading requirements at the delivery address, plus batteries, dangerous goods, temperature requirements or other special handling needs.
